What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a regulated primary healthcare profession that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal conditions — and how these affect your overall health and wellbeing.
At Bodyfix Clinic in Stoneleigh, Epsom, our experienced osteopaths take a holistic approach. We use careful observation, hands-on palpation (touch), and a detailed discussion of your medical history to reach an accurate diagnosis. As primary care practitioners, we can arrange or refer for further investigations like X-rays, MRI scans, ultrasound, blood tests, or urine tests when clinically appropriate.
How our Osteopaths treat you
Our osteopaths employ a wide range of gentle, evidence-based techniques tailored to your individual needs, including:
-
Soft tissue massage and release
-
Joint mobilisation and manipulation
-
Dry needling
-
Electrotherapy (such as interferential therapy and therapeutic ultrasound)
-
Kinesiology taping
-
Exercise and lifestyle advice
Every osteopath at Bodyfix Clinic brings their own unique style and expertise. We understand that finding the right practitioner is key to your comfort and results — whether you prefer a more structural focus, gentle approaches, or a combination.
What to expect on your first visit
When you meet your osteopath for the first time, he/she will make a full medical assessment before any treatment commences. You will be asked questions, not just about the pain or complaint that you have come in with, but also about you’re past medical history and day to day routine. Some of the questions may seem irrelevant, but they are extremely important to the osteopath in ensuring that the appropriate care is given. If the practitioner feels that osteopathy is not suitable for you, you will be referred to your GP, a specialist or another therapist in the practice.
Examination
Once your case history has been taken, your practitioner will examine you. The examination will concentrate on your neuro-musculo-skeletal system (nerves, muscles and joints), but it may also be necessary to check other things such as your blood pressure and pulse, or listen to your lungs or abdomen.
You may be asked to undress in order for the examination and treatment to take place and for your comfort we recommend bringing in shorts/ vest top. You will be given time to change in privacy. Gowns are available if you prefer.
Diagnosis
Before treatment starts, your practitioner will tell you what is wrong with you, what can be done about it and what you should expect when you receive your first treatment. You may also be told about exercises or changes to your lifestyle or diet that may be beneficial.
Treatment
Treatment is different for every patient and is dependent on your age, fitness and diagnosis. Osteopaths use a wide range of gentle, specific adjustments/ manipulations, done by hand, to free joints in the spine and other areas of the body that are not moving properly.
